How the preview is built
Title: under 60 characters (Moz benchmark) Description: 120 to 160 characters (Moz benchmark)
A Google result reads in three steps: the site name and the URL as a breadcrumb, the title in blue, then the description. The tool draws them with your words, at a desktop width and at a mobile width, and flags what does not fit.
The page does not decide alone what shows. Google may replace a problematic title with text taken from the page, and it chooses the snippet to show: your meta description when it describes the page better, otherwise a passage from the page itself.
Two settings to check before publishing
- The start of the title: when Google truncates, the first words are what remains. What names the page comes before the brand name.
- The description: it is the argument that makes people click on your page rather than the one next to it.
