Trackable QR Code Generator (UTM Link)

A printed QR code does not tell you where a visit comes from, unless its link carries UTM parameters. Type your page and your campaign: the tool writes the link and the QR code that leads to it.

A trackable QR code is a QR code whose link carries UTM parameters: source, medium and campaign. Google Analytics reads these parameters when the visit lands on the site and credits the visit to the campaign. A medium its rules do not recognize, such as “qr”, puts the visit in the “Unassigned” channel: a custom channel group sorts it separately.

The page the QR code leads to.
The printed item: poster, flyer, card, packaging.
The same for all your QR codes, to group them.
The operation: a trade show, a season, a launch.
To tell apart two QR codes of the same campaign.
Link encoded in the QR code

In Google Analytics, a medium its rules do not recognize, such as “qr”, falls into the “Unassigned” channel. To read your QR codes separately, create a custom channel group with the rule “medium exactly matches qr”.

The QR code is calculated in your browser, nothing is uploaded. Channels: Google Analytics help, read on 24 October 2026.

Your QR Codes Bring Visits. What Next?

A measured visit can be followed up: remarketing campaigns talk again to people who scanned without buying.

How the QR code is built

Link = page ? utm_source & utm_medium & utm_campaign QR code = that link, encoded to the ISO/IEC 18004 standard

The tool adds the utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign parameters to your page, in lowercase and without spaces, before any anchor, then encodes that link in a QR code. The link is written into the code itself: no service sits between the scan and your page.

All your QR codes share the same medium and change source or campaign: in Google Analytics, one channel group brings them together, and each poster reads separately. The UTM builder predicts the channel of your other links.

What the QR code lets you measure

  • A poster or a flyer: the visits it brings, and what they turn into on the site.
  • Two locations: one variant of the same QR code per location, to know which one gets scanned.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track QR code scans?

Add UTM parameters to the link before creating the QR code. Google Analytics then credits each visit to the link’s source and campaign.

Which Google Analytics channel does a QR code go into?

With the medium “qr”, into “Unassigned”, because none of its default rules recognizes it. A custom channel group with the rule “medium exactly matches qr” sorts it separately.

Does the QR code expire?

No: the link is written into the code itself, with no service in between. It works as long as your page exists.
