CPC Calculator
Two numbers, not one: your actual CPC, and the maximum CPC your target cost per acquisition allows you to pay.
CPC (cost per click) is the amount paid for one click on an ad. You get it by dividing total cost by clicks. Maximum CPC comes from your target CPA multiplied by your conversion rate: it is the ceiling beyond which a click can no longer be profitable.
Your CPC against the ceiling
- Profitable click
- Above the ceiling
The two calculations
CPC = Total cost ÷ Clicks Max CPC = Target CPA × Conversion rate
850 € for 1,400 clicks gives a CPC of 0.61 €. At a 3 % conversion rate and a 40 € target CPA, maximum CPC is 1.20 €: there is room to bid higher and take volume.
The second calculation is the one most often missing. Without it, a CPC is called "expensive" or "cheap" in a vacuum, when the only question is whether it sits under the ceiling profitability allows. A 3 € CPC is cheap at a 10 % conversion rate with a 40 € target CPA; it is impossible at 1 %.
⚠️ The practical consequence: improving conversion rate raises your bidding ceiling. Going from 3 % to 4 % lifts max CPC from 1.20 € to 1.60 €, which opens auctions that were out of reach.
Three traps with CPC
- Average CPC hides its distribution. An average of 0.61 € can blend brand keywords at 0.15 € with generics at 2 €. The account average steers nothing.
- CPC rarely falls on its own. It is worked through Quality Score, so through CTR, ad relevance and the landing page, not by lowering the bid, which mostly cuts volume.
- Max CPC is not a bid to type in. It is a profitability ceiling. Under automated bidding you translate it into a target CPA, not a manual CPC.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate CPC?
Divide total cost by clicks. For 850 € and 1,400 clicks: 850 ÷ 1,400 = 0.61 € per click.
How do I know the maximum CPC I can pay?
Multiply your target CPA by your conversion rate. A 40 € target CPA and a 3 % rate give 1.20 €: above that, a click can no longer produce a conversion at 40 €.
CPC or CPM, which one should I buy on?
They serve two objectives. CPM is for buying visibility, CPC for buying visits. CTR still links them, and the CPM calculator shows how one becomes the other.
CPC rising faster than your conversions?
That is usually a structure problem before it is a bidding problem: overlapping keywords, ad groups that are too broad, ads that do not answer the query.
